Update Cost of Motor Vehicle Crash Components

David Swedler, PhD

PIRE will:

(1) Update per-unit (injured person) Medical Care costs to reflect most currently available case mix, hospitalization rates, length of stay, per-diem costs, facility fees, ambulance fees, physician’s fees and any other relevant charges that affect the cost of treating motor vehicle injuries. Provide results stratified by both maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS) and KABCO injury scales.

(2) Update per-unit (injured person) market and household work loss estimates to reflect most currently available injury profiles and case mix, earnings, hospitalization rates and length of stay, and any other relevant factors that affect societal costs due to work loss. Provide results stratified by both maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS) and KABCO injury scales.

(3) Update per-vehicle property damage cost estimates to reflect most recent insurance claim frequency, incurred losses, deductibles, and any other relevant factors that address the cost of property damage in motor vehicle crashes. Distinguish between costs of crashes by reporting status—police-reported vs. non-police-reported. Provide results stratified by both maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS) and KABCO injury scales.

(4) Update Source of Payment estimates for medical costs, lost productivity, and property damage based on the most recent insurance and HCUP data.

(5) Update Police and Court costs. Provide results stratified by both maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS) and KABCO injury scales.

(6) Update values for quality adjusted life years (QALYs) based on recent VIBES data. Provide results stratified by both maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS) and KABCO injury scales.

(7) Provide written documentation of all methods, sources, and results in text documents intended as chapters within broader cost report.

(8) Provide Excel files documenting all calculations and data bases used to create final outputs.
